Post subtitles/info/etc
Hi everyone,

I just downloaded XBMC. I hope it's fine to ask a few questions here, since the XBMC site has been down for a few days.

I installed it on Windows 7. I installed the Alaska skin. I downloaded and installed the opensubtitles_osd script.

So:
1- How do I use the opensubtitles script? I copied the files, and it seems to be installed. How do I actually look for subtitles? (I use a Phillips SRN5100 remote by the way, and it seems to be working fine)

2- How can I edit/delete video sources? Apparently, it will only let me add more sources, I can't remove them or change the options!

3- I added two folders, one for movies, and one for tv shows. Whenever xbmc does not recognize the show, it won't add to the library. How can I force it to add the file anyway, and maybe assist it on locating the movie/tv show info?

4- Panel view for tv shows gives me squeezed/zoomed in thumbail images. Films work fine. Can I somehow change this?

Thank you!

These things are best answered on forum.xbmc.org, but since it's been down for a few days, I'll give it a go.

1) OpenSubitles_OSD was meant to be run from the Video OSD (the one you get when you press "I" while movie is playing full screen), so that you can easily download the subtitles while in there. It might not work with all skins, I know it works with Rapier for example - just because not all skins have extended the Video OSD menu (the 4 directions menu) to add a button for OpenSubtitles. For skins that do not accomodate OpenSubtitltes_OSD, I can recommend using the OpenSubtitles or Sublight plugin - while movie playing, exit full screenmode (TAB key), navigate to either the Main Menu if you have added the plugin to favorites or navigate Video > Plugins and run the plugins, both of them have an entry for searching for currently playing video. Also rightclick each plugin for settings.

If you want to try more skins, see here :
http://www.sshcs.com/xbmc/?mode=SK

or use the XBMCSVN.com Installer to download them from within XBMC (you might have to take the most recent version using SVN Repo Installer for now, I haven't released version 1.2 here yet, next day or so).

2) Just right click on the source entry and choose edit source or delete source.

That's a bit odd - did you download a nighlty build? I would stick with a stable XBMC build for now as a beginner and then move up.

3) You have to set Content type on each source, or even at a sub-folder level (not on every folder at every level obviously, it does inherit the content type it's parent, unless you want to change it) - that identifies the contents of the folders and make them behave differently, picking up scapers to get info about movies/shows etc. Set the content type and then scan the folder and that will add them to the library.

Hello, Dan Dar3. Thank you for understanding :)

1- I know Opensubtitles_OSD works with Alaska - I saw it at a friend's house and it was pretty much the whole point of installing XBMC for me (ok not the WHOLE point, but a good part of it :)). I'm still a newbie, so: how can I verify that I successfully installed the script? Pressing "I" with a running video shows its synopsis and info only.

2- Yes! :P Right clicking never occurred to me because mouse support in XBMC is so terrible I wasn't even using it. I *think* I downloaded a stable version, as I have no idea what a nightly build is :)

3- Yes, I have only 2 folders with many subfolders. It is scanning the subfolders and it understands what most of them are - but the ones it cannot identify (probably some file naming issue?), it just ignores. I wanted it do add the unrecognized movies/shows anyway. Is that possible? It's messing up a little bit too - getting some movies wrong, adding shows that does not exist (it added Curb Your Enthusiasm AND something called Curb, apparently an old show, and so on).

Thanks a lot for your help, man!

1) Sorry, not "I" key, try Esc or moving the mouse and see if you get the OSD. Some skins you have to go into it's settings to enable certain scripts to hook-up into the skin itself. Better ask Amet, the author of OpenSubtitles_OSD - http://code.google.com/u/amet1977/

2) Mouse is ok on Xbmc for Windows, but it depends on the skin whether it handle that well or not. Alaska I believe it doesn't handle mouse very well. You can check by going into Shutdown > Info menu - stable buids tend to be more tested, where night builds are down well every night from the SVN code, which tend to be buggy.

3) Personally, I set the name of the movie folder with Name (Year) and tick the checkbox that says "use the folder name " for lookups or something like that. You can always go to a particular folder and press "I" (while not playing) or right-click and choose "Movie Information" - if the information is incorrect, you can choose "Refresh" in the info panel and it will ask you to choose which match is closer - the automatic library scan doesn't ask you anything, it's sort of automatic.

Hey man,

1- Yeah, I guess something is not working. I'm not even sure I installed it properly. Will ask the author.

2- Even before I installed the skin, I got a GIANT mouse cursor that moves way too fast and is not precise. I'm not sure how to fix that.

3- I will try that - but, the thing is, a good part of my movie library has not been added to the XBMC library. So, I'm guessing the only way to make it show in XBMC is helping it properly guess which film we're talking about? It will not add the movie unless it finds info?

Thanks again mate!

1) Scripts on Windows should usually go in %APPDATA%\XBMC\skins or %PROGRAMFILES%\XBMC\skins, depending on where you chose to store the user data at installation time - you should see the script in Scripts menu entry, that's where you can configure it, by running it. It gets easier if you install the XBMC Zone Installer first, it knows where to install each script or plugin type.

2) That giant cursor is XBMCs alright, I don't know know about the movement. If not sure what you installed, it's probably better to stick to a stable XBMC 9.11 build, see here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xbmc/

3) I don't know, if you are willing to give a shot, send me an email at dan.dar33@gmail.com and we can arrange for a remote TeamViewer session if you want.

1- I emailed the man, like you suggested. Very helpful. I actually downloaded it from the SVN repo installer and it works almost perfectly.
What I need to do is press 'M' with the video playing and hit that 'subtitle' button. Now, question: I have this Phillips SRM5100 remote that I use to control Media Center/XBMC. Is it possible to somehow map the XBMC subtitle function to my remote?
Also, I need to configure the script to my preferred languages. The author said I should go to the scripts section under the main menu and hit 'C' or right click. WHen I do that for opensubtitles_OSD, I can only 'view the changelog' or 'uninstall'. How do I configure scripts?

2- Where can I check my current version? I think it's 9.11. It's horrible though :P Not that I mind too much, as long as I can control via remote and keyboard :)

3- Sure, even though I have no clue what TeamViewer is. Will email you. :)
EDIT - Update on 3: Actually, setting it to search the folder name did the trick. I think it gets pretty much everything now. Even a stand up show I didn't expect it to :) Renaming some episode names for TV shows also worked, so I guess I should do this for the few remaining that are not recognized. The only thing it does not get at all is Watchmen - Under the Hood. No big deal though :)

Thanks again!

1) I haven't done it before, but i think this might help with mapping your remote:
http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Keymap.xml

I think you're looking at it through SVN Repo Installer, while he was talking about the main XBMC menu. Normally you don't configure scripts, but he wrote it in such a way that if you run it from XBMC Main Menu > Scripts, it will popup the settings screen. Then you run it from the video OSD.

2) Version should be shown in XBMC Main Menu > Shutdown > Information screen, or in the log file (in your case, %APPDATA%\XBMC\xbmc.log) at the top.

3) That's what I suggested as well, try to keep the folder names as on IMDB.com or TheTVDB.com - depenging to which you set the scrapper to when you set the content.
Watchmen - Under the Hood might be named Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter and Under the Hood (USA)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1295071/

TeamViewer is a support tool where a remote person can see your screen and even do actions while you can watch your screen, chat, transfer files etc. There's no need now as i've seen you found your feet :-)

Hey man :)

Actually, there is no Main Menu-> Scripts. The closest thing in Main Menu is Programs. I have Programs, Videos, Music, Movies, TV Shows, Pictures, Weather and Settings from the Main Menu. I pretty much tried hitting 'C' everywhere, to no avail :( Any clues?

Thanks!

EDIT: XBMC 9.11 r26017, is that the good one?

Actually, it was a skin problem (sounds like a disease :P). Alaska doesn't have said submenus. I reverted to one of the defaults, found the "Scripts" submenu, set it up, voila.

All seems to be working beautifully now :)

Thank you very much pal! :)

Great stuff! I should've mentioned that whenever having problems revert to basic skins like PMIII or PM3.HD or in the newer versions, Confluence.

But you did well and learnt it all very quickly, well done.

XBMC.org seems to be back, if any issues, see the Windows forum in there.

Enjoy!
